The Excavation of a Hallstatt Period Settlement and Manor Farm in Enkering, on the ICE Rail Tracksby Martin Schaich The Hallstatt period settlement feature in the Anlauter valley is unparalleled in southern Germany thanks to the outstanding preservation conditions of the flood plain situation. The process of evaluating such a site is correspondingly complicated and has not yet progressed beyond preliminary stages despite the ongoing excavations. Large sections of this significant settlement were directly threatened by a building project on the ICE tracks. Almost the entire endangered area was investigated in 1999 thanks to the concerted efforts of the Bavarian state heritage authorities (Ingolstadt branch) and our excavation company. Contents
