    Surveying with Photogrammetry

Technique

  • Photographic recording of sectors
    (digital camera or slide scan)

  • Tacheometric surveying of the sectors using a minimum of four control points per quadrant

  • 3D levelling (tacheometric)

  • Photographic rectification using the PhotoPlan photogrammetry software

  • Combining and editing photographs

  • Plan creation (on-screen digitisation)

  • Creating a publication template

The rectified plan can be printed out on site. The archaeologists involved in the project can then enter any additional information which was prehaps not clearly recognisable in the photographs onto the printout or into enlarged areas of the plan. This method considerably accelerates the progress of excavations, particularly those which involve the documentation of numerous graves and are running on a tight schedule.

This method saves a substantial amount of time when compared to conventional, manual graphic documentation. Even the most complex skeleton graves can be exhaustively documented in approximately 90 minutes.
