Regensburg-Kumpfmuehl
A Large Roman Cemetery

In October of 1999, ArcTron completed an excavation of a large Roman cemetery in the Kumpfmuehl area of Regensburg (including skeleton graves, urns and masonry). The entire excavation was documented using photogrammetry including all plana and sections and over 200 burials. This saved an enormous amount of time as even the most complex skeleton graves could be thoroughly documented within approximately 90 minutes.

The recitifed plan was printed out on site which allowed the archaeologists involved to make any necessary ammendments or to add infomation which was perhaps not clearly recognisable in the photographs.

This method considerably accelerates the progress of excavations, particularly those which involve the documentation of numerous graves and are running on a tight schedule.

Munich - Loewenturm
A Late Medieval Brick Structure

Photogrammetry can also be used to document buildings. The structure is first recorded photograpically, sector by sector, and the control points are surveyed using a total station. The individual images are then rectified in a central projection using 4 or more control points to place each picture, and then assembled into a two dimensional photographic plan.

This method was used to document the Loewenturm (Lion's Tower) in Munich. Over 200 individual photos were rectified and processed to produce a 3D model and an accurate, digital, stone-by-stone plan.
