Photogrammetry

Rectified photogrammetry image of an excavated grave

In recent years there have been many advances made in the field of digital photography and image rectification. The potential of photogrammetry is a great asset for the field of archaeology, especially when using modern digital cameras. Photos can be promptly edited, which is particularly useful when, for example, a grave find has to be recorded and lifted on the same day.

Once the finds or features have been recorded, the individual images are rectified using a grid of surveyed control points and assembled into continuous, two-dimensional photo plans. We work predominantly with a kubit application for AutoCAD 2002 called PhoToPlan. Kubit PhotoPlan enables the user to assemble mosaics from photogrammetry recordings using control points which are set out in quadrants and accurately surveyed using a total station.
