Monumental Statue Bavaria, Munich

Task:
Complete, photo-realistic, 3D documentation and damage mapping

Data acquisition:
Surveyed with laser scanner, stripe-light scanner and total station

Data quantity:
approx. 500 million points

Result: 3D model with various types of information incorporated

It is the first time since 1850 that it has been possible to carry out a detailed survey of this 18m high statue of Bavaria. Detailed investigation and documentation was possible due to current restoration work and the erection of scaffolding around the statue.
This project was initiated and promoted by the 'Bayerischen Verwaltung der staatlichen Schlösser, Gärten und Seen' (Bavarian department for castles, gardens and lakes) and the 'Deutschen Stiftung Denkmalschutz' (German heritage foundation) comprising a comprehensive three dimensional survey and the photo-realistic documentation of this cultural monument.
The project was carried out in July and August 2002 by ArcTron GmbH in cooperation with Ingenieurbuero Dr. Koenig (Potsdam) and Polygon Technology GmbH (Darmstadt).

Almost 1/2 billion 3D points were measured during the survey. This enormous amount of data is currently being processed with 3D modelling software specifically designed for statues (QT Sculptor). The model will later be given a photo-realistic texture in a complex process involving the use of over 300 digital photo and video recordings.
The result will be an accurate, computerised, 3D replica of Bavaria.

During documentation, hundreds of individual observations were recorded concerning the construction process and state of preservation of the statue. Observations of the restoration work in progress were also made. This information was recorded in a 3D information system especially developed by ArcTron GmbH.
The data collected in 2002 has enabled us to precisely describe the condition of this outstanding monumental bronze sculpture. This data will also certainly be of further use for many future investigations.

Future plans for the three dimensional model include making it available to the general public in publications and exhibitions of the Bavaria. Other media such as the internet or multimedia platforms etc. will also be used for this purpose.

Finally, it is also possible to create three dimensional, scaled reproductions of the Bavaria in various materials using the computerised model as a template. These reproductions could perhaps be used in exhibitions or be made as as high-quality replicas of the statue.
