Arts Monuments & Object Scanning

We are able to produce high-resolution 3D scans with sub-millimetre precision, employing a stripe light scanner developed by the Frauenhofer Institute for Graphic Data Processing.

Smaller objects can be accurately recorded in three dimensions using this close-range scanner. These 3D scans are then converted into photo-realistic 3D models and provide the basis for reproductions (e.g. using rapid prototyping technologies).

Example: The Constantine Colossus, Rome
Rekonstruktion der kolossalen Konstantinsstatue
Task: 3D Scanning
3D Modelling
3D Reconstruction
3D Reproduction
Data acquisition: Surveyed using laser scanners, structured light scanners, total stations
Data quantity: approx. 1000 scans
In 2004, Dr. Eckart Koehne from the Constantine exhibition society and archaeological surveying spezialist Martin Schaich from ArcTron 3D GmbH developed a blod concept: to document the various fragments of the colossal statue of the Emperor Constantine remaining in Rome in threee dimensions using a combination of archaeological research and innovative high-technology. The statue was then to be partially reconstructed and reproduced for the state exhibition in Trier.

Example: Monumental Statue Bavaria, Munich
Bavaria: 3D model of the head
Task: Complete photo-realistic 3D documentation, damage mapping
Data acquisition: Laser scanner and stripe-light scanner survey, total station
Data quantity: Approx. 500 million points
Survey duration: Approx. 8 weeks
Data processing: In progress
Result: 3D model with various types of information incorporated

It is the first time since 1850 that it has been possible to carry out a detailed survey of the 18m high statue of Bavaria. Detailed investigation and documentation was possible due to current restoration work and the erection of scaffolding around the statue.
This project was initiated and promoted by the 'Bayerische Verwaltung der staatlichen Schlösser, Gärten und Seen' ( Bavarian department of castles, gardens and lakes) and the 'Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz'; (German heritage foundation) comprising a comprehensive three dimensional survey and the photo-realistic documentation of this cultural monument..
